Foothills Senior Golf League

PLAY DAY GAMES EXPLAINED

Every week a different game is played, and prizes are awarded according to who won the game of the day. Here are the games and explanation of how they are played.

Establishing a Handicap:

Before a member is eligible to earn winnings for the Play Day Games, a valid handicap must be established.
Returning members that had a valid handicap from last year, will start the new year with the handicap established using previous games and will be eligible for Play Day Game winnings at the start of the new year league.
New members must play 3 rounds of golf in the respective course, Par 3 or Exec 9, to establish a handicap before becoming eligible for Play Day Game winnings. If a new member for the Exec 9 or Par 3 league has played the Foothills Exec 9 or Par 3 course prior to becoming a Senior League member, but within the past 12 months, that member may establish a handicap by submitting signed and attested score cards of the previous games to any league board member.

Secret Partner :

Random partner matches will be made within flight/gender. This means that a list of all players from flight A that played on the Secret Partner day would be generated. Each A flight player would be randomly matched with another A flight player, of the same gender, until all players are partnered. This could result in one player not being matched with anyone in flight A. The net score for each player will be calculated. The net scores for each pair will be added together and averaged. If there is one player not matched, then that player's net score will be compared with the combined averaged scores of paired players. The pair or unmatched player with the lowest averaged combined net score will be the 1st place winner for that flight A. Each player in the winning pair for flight A will receive the dollar value of 1st place prize money for that league/flight A. If the unmatched player has the lowest net score, then that player will receive the dollar value of 1st place prize money. There will be only 1st place prize for Secret partner. The same process will be done for all other flights/genders.

Secret Game :

Every so often the game of the day will be Secret Game. What this means is that, during play, the players will not know what the game of the day will be. After all have played and after scores are input by the Handicap Chairman, the Secret Game will be selected from a pool of possible play-day games that are not proximity games (example: longest drive). The winners of this day’s game will be determined by the play day game that was selected.

The following list of games will have winners by league/flight. Net scores will be used to determine winners unless otherwise noted.
The number of winning places and number of flights for each league and gender will be established each year.
The number of flights for each league and gender will be determined depending on how many players are in each league.

Ringer Tournament : The Ringer tournament is played over a two week period. Your best score from each hole for the two weeks will be used to determine your gross score from which net handicap score is calculated. For example if you get a 6 on hole one the first week and a 4 on hole one the second week, the score of 4 will be used for your total strokes for hole one. The same will be done for all nine holes resulting in your gross score. Your handicap for the first week of the tournament will be subtracted from this gross to yield a net score for the tournament. Players who play only one of the Ringer tournament games will use each hole score for that game for Ringer gross and net score calculation.
Players with the lowest net score will be awarded prize money for each flight according to the Payout Dollars schedule.

Championship Tournament: The Championship tournament is played over a 3 week period. Net scores are calculated for the best 2 weeks using the handicap that is in place for the first week. A player must play at least 2 weeks of the tournament to qualify for winnings. Two players in each flight and league, for both men and ladies, with the lowest net score of the two best weeks will be determined the first and second place winners and will be awarded their winnings at the fall luncheon. 50% prior attendance is required to be eligible for Championship prizes.

Christmas in July: The handicap chairman will not count the score on the hole with the highest score as a Christmas present. The gross score is calculated for the 8 remaining holes. The net scores are calculated by subtracting the (handicap x 8/9) from the gross for the 8 holes. Players with the lowest net scores will be awarded prize money for each flight according to the Payout Dollars schedule.

Three Blind Mice: This is similar to Christmas in July, except scores on three holes will be selected and excluded from your score to calculate your net handicap score. The 3 holes to exclude will be randomly selected before play and remain unknown to the players. The gross score is calculated for the remaining 6 holes. The net score is calculated by subtracting the (handicap x 6/9) from the gross for the 6 holes. Players with the lowest net scores will be awarded prize money for each flight according to the Payout Dollars schedule.

Net or Gross of Selected Holes: The following list of games are scored in a similar way and handicaps applied according to the Handicap fraction.

Game Handicap fraction
Net of holes 1-5 5/9
Net of holes 2-6 5/9
Net of holes 3-7 5/9
Net of holes 4-8 5/9
Net of holes 5-9 5/9
Net of even holes 4/9
Net of odd holes 5/9
Low net of par 3 holes (Exec 9 league) 5/9
Low net of par 3 holes (Par3 league) 9/9
Net of par 4 holes (Exec 9 only) 4/9
Gross is the score recorded for each selected hole on the score card that is submitted to the handicap chairman. Net means gross score of selected holes minus your handicap times the handicap fraction.
Players with the lowest net scores will be awarded prize money for each flight/gender according to the Payout Dollars schedule.

Net of Best Six: In this game the best (lowest) six holes are added to get gross of those 6 holes. Then the handicap times 6/9 is subtracted to get the net of the lowest 6 holes. Persons with the lowest net scores will be awarded prize money for each flight according to the Payout Dollars schedule.

3 clubs and a putter: Players are allowed only 3 clubs of their choice and a putter. The player will be disqualified for this game for carrying more than the allowed number of clubs, in his/her bag during play. If a club other than a putter is chosen as a putter, that club can only be used to putt with. Gross score is calculated for all 9 holes. Net is calculated by subtracting current handicap from the gross score.
Players with the lowest net score will be awarded prize money for each flight according to the Payout Dollars schedule.

Low Gross score or Low Gross of selected holes: For this game only gross scores for all 9 holes or the selected holes are used to determine winners for each league/flight.
Players with the lowest gross score will be awarded prize money for each flight according to the Payout Dollars schedule.

Low Net score: For this game only net scores for all 9 holes are used to determine winners for each league/flight. Gross score is calculated for all 9 holes. Net is calculated by subtracting current handicap from the gross score.
Players with the lowest net score will be awarded prize money for each flight according to the Payout Dollars schedule.

The next list of games will have only one winner per league/flight/gender. Players must sign a card that will be placed in the fairway or on the green for the flight and gender that they are in for the current game. The current flight for players will be listed on the score cards. Please check your flight BEFORE signing the card. Signing an incorrect flight/gender card will cause you to be ineligible for winning that day's game.

Longest Drive: The Longest Drive is the first shot off the tee box that ends up in or on the fairway. There will be only one winner per flight/gender. If the shot ends up in the rough or on the first cut off the fairway or on the green, it does not quality as the longest drive. There will be a card to sign on the fairway for each flight/gender. Players must sign the correct card for their flight/gender.

Longest Putt: The longest putt is the longest first putt, once the ball is on the green, that goes in the hole. In other words, long second putts do not count. Also putts made from the fringe do not count. Please use the tape measure to measure your long putt and record on the Longest putt card. After you have recorded your long putt, replace Proximity Marker card to side of green. Do not leave proximity marker card on the green, please. There will be only one winner per flight/gender. There will be a separate card to sign on the green for each flight/gender. Players must sign the correct card for their flight/gender.

Closest to the Pin: This is the first shot off the tee that ends up closest to the pin and is on the green. Any second shot made from the fairway or the tee, (in case of a first shot that went out of bounds), does not qualify. Please use the tape measure to measure your drive ball and record on the Closest to the pin card. After you have recorded your closest to the pin drive, replace Proximity Marker card to side of green. Do not leave proximity marker card on the green There will be a separate card to sign on the green for each flight/gender. Players must sign the correct card for their flight/gender to be eligible for winning. There will be only one winner per flight/gender.

Closest to the line: Somebody will draw a white line down the fairway before the start of the day. The closest tee shot to the line for each flight/gender is the winner. There will be only one winner per flight/gender. There will be a card to sign on the fairway for each flight/gender. Players must sign the correct card for their flight/gender.

Handling Ties:

  • Most games winner will be determined by using the 2 decimal place handicap. Exceptions will be low gross scores, longest drive, longest putt, closest to line and closest to the pin.
  • If there is a two way tie for 1st place, then the prize monies for 1st and 2nd place will be added together and divided evenly between the two 1st place winners. In this case there would be no 2nd place winner. If the league has 3rd place winners, then the 3rd place winner will get 3rd place prize money.
  • Likewise, if there is a three way tie for 1st place, then the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd (if applicable) place monies will be added together and divided evenly between the three 1st place tie winners. In this case there would be no 2nd or 3rd place winners.
  • If there is one 1st place winner and two 2nd place winners, then the 1st place winner will get the 1st place prize money, The two 2nd place winners will split the 2nd and 3rd place prize money evenly. There will be no 3rd place winner
  • If there is one 1st place winner, one 2nd place winner and two 3rd place winners, the the 1st place winner will get the full 1st place prize money, the 2nd place winner will get the full 2nd place prize money and the two 3rd place winners would split the 3rd place prize money evenly.
  • Other tie scenarios would be handled similarly.
